I didn't know at the time but I've wanted a crock-pot since the day I moved out on my own. I lived by myself, did all of the cooking, and all of the cleaning. Living on my own that also meant doing all of the working, to do all of the earning, to do all of the shopping so I could do most of the eating. After a 12 hour shift, usually longer since I never seem to get out of work on time, who the heck wants to go home and start cooking? Not me, so I often stopped on my way home for fast food or take-out. Not because I wanted to eat so poorly but because I wanted to eat something before it was so late that I needed to go to bed so I could start all over again the next day.
Then, years later, I was over at my girlfriend's apartment and she had made us dinner... without being home! Those short ribs were amazing! Meat just falls off the bone ribs.
A few weeks later, she made the most amazing cottage pie (like shepherd's pie except with ground beef), again without us being there except to eat. Many meals, all made either without us home or just not standing around the kitchen. I love crock-pots.
Now, I am no longer with that young lady but I own two crock-pots, both Rival. One is a 6-quart programmable and the other is the 5-quart programmable with the black embossed stoneware. The 5-quart is my most recent acquisition. I've wanted this model since I first saw it at Costco but I didn't need one at the time because I was still with the previously mentioned girlfriend. Once I was in the market for my own crock-pot, they were no where to be found so I had to settle on the regular 6-quart programmable. To it's defense, I cooked a rather large pork shoulder for pulled pork that was AMAZING and EASY! Sometimes, size does matter. ;0)
Having just recently been discharged from the hospital after an accident, my family has been helping me. My mother and I were in the supermarket (Pathmark on Long Island in Centereach to be exact) just this past weekend and while wandering the aisles, there they were. Among many other dusty appliance boxes, Rival crock-pots. Looking closer still, I could hardly believe it but there, right in arms reach, are two black embossed stoneware 6-quart programmable models and one white embossed stoneware 5-quart programmable model. After checking them to see if they were damaged and being pleasantly surprised, I bought one of the black and my mother bought the white.
At check-out, we were surprised again. The price marked on the shelf was $[...] and I was eager to pay that for that which I'd been searching. However, I guess the store was looking to sell off old stock at a pretty decent discount. After a $[...] deduction, we each paid only $[...] + tax.
The beginning of this review is most definitely about encouraging your purchase of a Rival crock-pot. I love mine. It's one of those purchases that you'll never regret. The second half is to inspire you to keep looking until you find it at a price you're willing to pay. It's well worth it and there are plenty of cookbooks out there dedicated to crock-pot adjusted recipes, so keep an eye out for them, too. Best of luck!

I got this for my mom for Christmas. She loves halloween so much that I just had to get her this when I saw it. Believe me, this thing is very heavy duty, and so far it works very well. She has been using it to make all kinds of concoctions (the instruction manual has some recipes in it).
